Marije joins team 'Data Explorers'
Hi Marije, we can now officially welcome you at Simacan! Last year you did your graduation internship with us, but now you are joining us. Before we talk about what you are going to do, would you like to introduce yourself for those who don't know you yet?
I am Marije Gemmink and I am 30 years old. I live in Amersfoort together with my boyfriend. After secondary school, I studied Social Pedagogical Work and then I worked in childcare with a lot of pleasure. However, I noticed that I still wanted more and that is why I started to investigate what kind of education I wanted to do. That's when I decided to study Applied Mathematics at HBO level. I graduated from that course two years ago (also at Simacan) and subsequently followed the Master's in Business Analytics, which I passed at the beginning of August.
So now I am working at Simacan! Are you looking forward to it? What are you looking forward to most?
I am definitely looking forward to working at Simacan. I am joining the Explorers team and I am looking forward to doing more data research in addition to my graduation project. The team is very sociable, but also helpful, so I am sure I will learn a lot of new things.
Will there be many changes in your work? And if so, can you tell us what you did during your internship and what you will do now at Simacan?
For my graduation project, I worked on a stop detection model based on machine learning. The type of work is similar to what I will be doing now as a data researcher. I am now working on a project to detect the breaks that drivers take during their trips.
How do you feel about starting your first job after college in these crazy times?
It already makes a difference that I did my graduation project at Simacan. Therefore I already know my colleagues and many systems. Fortunately, this 'crazy time' is getting a little better and I can work a little more at the office. I will therefore alternate a bit between working at home and at the office.
Anything else you want to say?
My hobbies are playing badminton (also fanatically in the competition), running and playing the piano (every two weeks I take piano lessons). I am also a fanatical escape room player who travels the whole country to play the best escape rooms.
I also enjoy making jigsaw puzzles. During the lockdown I became a fan of large jigsaw puzzles (think ± 40,000 pieces, fortunately divided over several pockets!). If anyone wants to take up the challenge, let me know and I will lend you a puzzle!
